Andri Schatz recommended Ex Machina.
Best on-screen AI portrayal thus far imho. If you won't watch it for the brilliant acting, writing, architecture and scene design, watch it for the marvelous musical score.

Andri Schatz recommended Ghost in the Shell.
GitS is one of the most visionary works in anime and contemporary culture at large. It paints a picture of a future beyond brands and capital, where the power of coded information has become greater than anything else.

Beyond its visually appealing façade, it asks existential questions about human consciousness and the human condition.

Andri Schatz recommended Akira.
A brilliant example of why cartoons aren't just for children, Akira's value is visible within its influence in all anime that came after, as well as outside anime.

Andri Schatz recommended House of Flying Daggers.
First DVD I ever bought in my life. Zhang Yimou in all his brilliance, but without the usual massiveness. House of Flying Daggers paints a story of love, politics and throwing knives with utmost elegance. This is wuxia without too much flying, romance without too much crying and war without too many armies.

Umebayashi Shigeru's score is breathtaking beyond words.

Andri Schatz recommended Ip Man 2.
A worthy sequel to Ip Man, this movie shows Donnie Yen portraying Ip Man's endeavour to open a martial arts school in Hong Kong. In one of the more interesting scenes in action cinema, he fights against Darren Shahlavi as "Twister", a western boxing champion.

Andri Schatz recommended Ip Man.
The story of Ip Man, the first Wing Chun master to break the lineage-based teaching tradition that had been inherent to most martial arts.

It's a story of perseverance, the value of tradition and hope amidst the troubles of war.

Donnie Yen plays a very believable Ip Man and exhibits remarkable mastery of Wing Chun despite (or thanks to?) his Wushu heritage.

Andri Schatz recommended Fearless.
Far more than an action movie, Fearless tells the story of Huo Yuan Jia, founder of the Chin Woo Athletic Association and a master of traditional Chinese martial arts amidst the emerging globalization of the early 20th century.

Aside from Jet Li's usual martial arts brilliance, the ages-old rivalry between China and Japan is questioned in the final scenes by demonstrating the respect, appreciation and deep sense of responsibility that is part of both countries' cultural foundation.

This movie lets us fathom the true meaning of kung fu. It's not about fighting but about honing a skill through hard work, to the point at which you become fearless.

Andri Schatz recommended Hero.
A Zhang Yimou classic, HERO paints a story three times in different music, color and meaning. A story of truth, lies, love and the vision of a brighter future, it features Jet Li in his usual majestic awesomeness, Maggie Cheung who won't talk to Tony Leung Chiu-Wai because he totally made out with a Zhang Ziyi in early bloom. Donnie Yen shows us that he is skilled with traditional weapons too in his wonderful spearplay. Chen Daoming makes for a very convincing King of Qin.
